Gone Fishing- Crawling Valley

When fishing Walleye here with bait it’s a good idea to wait a couple of seconds after the initial bite so as to let the fish get the bait in it’s mouth. I know this as I have fished here many times before but sometimes it’s hard to settle down. Once I came back to my senses I was in to my first fish of the day, a big fat Pike that was peeling line off my reel. I don’t think he liked my size 1 hook in his yap per.  The pike here are usually medium size on average but I do not specifically target them I’m here for the Walleye. About 10 minutes after the first fish it’s nibble, nibble and I’m in to my first Walleye of the 2006 season.

Gone Fishing – Crawling Valley

The Walleye here are light biters so you must pay close attention to your rod tip. A sure fire way to know if your getting hits is to hold your rod in your hand and then you will know without a doubt. Also, it’s a good idea to move up and down the area your fishing to try and find the prime location where the fish are holding. So today was a pretty good day for fishing at the Valley. In total I caught six Walleye and three Pike with my biggest Walleye measuring in at 26 inches and weighing approximately 6-8 pounds. Not too bad for a days total. I have had many days that were more productive here but you know what I’m not complaining, I have also had worse days at work and I know where I would rather be.

Kickin back at Crawling

Gone Fishin – May

Well my fishing friends I made it to the Bow River on Friday May the 20 and the water was dirty and full of algae. I had a feeling that the river was going to be a little dirty but I did not know it was going to be that bad. The Bow probably will not be fishable for about 3-4 weeks for spin fishing but may be good for fly fishing as there is a major hatch coming off the river now.  I think it’s time to go fishing elsewhere as the Bow River cleans up. Even though the fishing was not good it was still nice to float down the river and get some peace and quiet. I’m now going to let the Bow clean up and focus my attention on other bodies of water around Calgary. Next stop will be Crawling Valley for the big Walleye and Pike that live here. After the Bow cleans up the Trout fishing will be awesome so I will keep you posted the next time I head out fishing.

Gone Fishing – May

Well it’s that time again my fishing friends, May long weekend is finally here. I live for long weekends and long weekends equal time spent on the river. Golfing has kind of gotten in the way of fishing lately but now it’s time to get back at it. I’m planning a float down the Bow River on Saturday and I’m going to go to Crawling Valley on Monday so I’m looking forward to an awesome weekend of fishing. And you know what, I’m at the stage where if I don’t catch a whole bunch of fish I’m o.k. with that; so long as I’m out of the house and beside some water. The weather in and around Calgary for the weekend looks pretty good with Saturday forecast calling for a high of 24 degrees and light rain. Sunday and Monday both look good with highs of 25 and 27 degrees respectively.
