Bass Pro Shop Is Coming, Bass Pro Shop is Coming

As I drive by the Cross Iron Mills mall which has not yet gained popularity, I cannot help but turn my head and smile. The reason for the ear to ear smile is the massive 150,000 square feet Bass Pro Shop of course. A fisherman’s dream, a hunter’s every wish. It is anticipated that Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World and NASCAR Speedpark will be the major entertainment tenants, marking their second Canadian locations after Vaughan Mills mall in Vaughan, Ontario. The mall often referred to as the “Balzac mall” or “Balzac racetrack” is located in the Municipal District of Rocky View, on the south east corner of Highway 2 and Highway 566 just outside of Calgary, which is also known as the Balzac overpass.

A Bass Pro Shops store ranges from 300,000 square feet (28,000 m²) all the way down to 42,000 square feet (3,900 m²), many of them have two levels and are around 150,000 square feet (14,000 m²). Around the stores, you will see taxidermy mounts native to the area. All of the stores have an indoor water feature that showcase fish species that are indigenous to the area with the larger stores having more than one water feature. In some of these aquariums professional anglers and store pro-staff hold demonstrations showing the use of an artificial bait. Bass Pro Shops is also known for its Outdoor Skills Workshops. These classes are free and open to the public on a first come first served basis. They teach skills as varied as fly-casting, Dutch oven cooking, archery hunting, and GPS navigation.

Bass Pro has published one-page ads in outdoor magazines that their stores are “so damn big, you have to hire a guide.” What makes the stores really unique is the detail taken when designing the interior and exterior of the store. Bass Pro has a fabrication shop in Nixa, Missouri, that builds the pine and cedar log structures, as well as 55 artisans that are coppersmiths, blacksmiths, carvers, painters and fabricators. They hand make the chandeliers, lights, lanterns, wood carvings and iron work that is displayed throughout the store. They also have artists that paint huge murals on the walls and ceilings that incorporate mounted animals for a 3-D effect.

Bass Pro Shops (Outdoor World) is a privately held sports equipment and outdoor recreation goods store headquartered in Springfield, Missouri. The original Outdoor World store, referred to as the “Grand Daddy” is located at the corner of Sunshine and Campbell in Springfield. Bass Pro Shops rings up an estimated $1.9 billion in sales in about fifty large retail stores in the United States and one in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. It also owns and operates subsidiaries such as Tracker Boats, Big Cedar Lodge, Redhead, XPS, American Rod and Gun, White River Fly Shop and restaurants, Islamorada Fish Company, Hemingway’s Blue Water Cafe and Riverside Inn. Bass Pro Shops is known for a large selection of hunting, fishing, and other outdoor gear.

Bass Pro Shops have a huge assortment of fishing tackle that is exclusive to their store. Rods, reels and tackle are just some of the gear only found within their retail outlets. This just increased my odds of catching more fish as it did your odds. I will be one of the first people to walk into the store come opening day and believe me I will have cash in hand, lots of it. I will selectively pick out lures I have never seen before and use them on my next fishing adventure. I will also take a good look at their reels and rods and maybe purchase something that suits me and my style of fishing. I do visit their online fishing store and look around but it’s just not the same as being there and seeing it first hand. You know actually spinning the reels, feeling the rod in your hand, shaking the lure to hear the sounds. You cannot do that over the internet! This new store is only going to improve on what is an already great fishing resource here in Alberta. Who knows, you might just see me behind the counter selling you some tackle one day?

Testimonials

“Just as Mike describes, I was looking to do a float of the Bow River to get an education on how to fish the river.  After floating from Policeman’s to Carseland, I had hooked into at least a couple dozen rainbows/browns.  There was one brown that was notably fat, and put up a tremendous battle.  Anyways, I learned a lot on how to cast properly, how to read the river, as well as tackle selection.  Most importantly, Mike put me on to a lot of fish.  The next day, I tried a little bit of shore fishing along the Bow in Calgary.

I remember what Mike taught me about reading the water and spinner selection, and sure enough I had a trout on the line within my first ten casts!  If you’re looking for a good time, good scenery and great fishing, definitely give Mike’s Bow River float trip a try.  It’s a great way to spend a day.”

A Guided Fishing Trip on the Bow River.

I opened my e-mail in box and noticed I had another comment waiting for approval on the Blog, I love getting comments on the website. As I opened the comment it was actually a request for a fishing trip and not a comment. I like those kind of e-mail’s even better. Chris was looking to float the Bow River with me and learn how to hook into some large fish that this river is known for.

I asked Chris many questions during our phone conversation we had a few days before our trip. I made some suggestions to him on the kind of fishing line he should spool on his reel. Chris wanted to bring his own rod and reel combo. I would do the same if it were me as I am very personal with my own fishing gear; using another persons fishing gear would just not appeal to me. However Chris did state he would use a rod and reel I would provide for him. “Ok we are all set then, let’s meet at five’ thirty at the Tim Horton’s on the south end of Calgary” I said over the phone. Chris gladly accepted and we were off to fish the magnificent Bow River.

I blew up the boat, tied all the hooks onto the line, asked some more questions, gave some helpful advice and we were off. Gliding down the river is the best way to claim major trout. We came around the corner just after we entered the water at Policeman’s Flats and Chris had the first fish of his trip, a scrappy little Rainbow Trout. There were many, many more fish that Chris was able to hook into; the most notable one was a twenty four inch Brown that latched into his X-Rap. That folks was the one that got away. Chris was happy to see the fish, and be able to fight it.

All in all it was a great day for Chris, we were able to catch and land over twenty fish on the day. There was a great mix of Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout being landed. If we were to count I bet it would have been exactly the same amount of both species. Chris is now confident he can take his newly acquired skills and apply them when he is out fishing. That is the reason he wanted a lesson fishing the Bow River. To consistently catch fish when he goes out fishing is the name of the game for Chris as it is for most of us. I sure hope you do very well on your next trip to the Bow River and “catch the fish of your dreams”. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my knowledge with you. I am grateful for that Chris!

Fishing the Beautiful Bow River

It has always been my pleasure to be able to help new fishermen/women get into this great sport. Many people have always wanted to try fishing but cannot find the time or the patience it requires. Some go out fishing for hours on end and do not even get a bite let alone battle any trout. I had the honor of guiding two very nice people today and asked them if I could share their story here on the Blog. Darren and Lena have been fishing for quite sometime now concentrating on several rivers and lakes here in the province of Alberta. Darren had stated via e-mail that they have caught small trout here and there but just cannot seem to catch any big fish, or for that matter catch lots of them. Darren informed me that he has heard great stories from other fishermen that the Bow River holds large trout, and many of them. They decided to give me the privilege of sharing my knowledge and experience on the rivers edge.

We arrived at a quit spot along the east bank of the Bow River at nine AM sharp. I wanted to share my knowledge of presenting the spinner bait to trout in fast flowing water. The river is still moving at great speed and presentation is an important factor in hooking into good sized trout. Three casts later and Lena was into a giant Brown Trout that gave her quite the scrap. The last day of the Calgary Stampede was yesterday and we had a rodeo of our own along the river bank. Lena did an excellent job of staying with her fish and landing it onto the shoreline. Three casts and one large Brown, good odds I must say. It was Darren’s turn next and he was able to hook himself three excellent sized Rainbows that fought hard and peeled out the monofilament. We were privileged enough to capture Darren’s and Lena’s fish on film and they will keep this memory for a lifetime. It’s like the saying goes “A picture says a thousand words”. There is no need to tell fishing stories after great shots like the one we were able to capture.

For me it is so rewarding to be able to help such a wonderful couple on their journey to becoming serious about the sport of trout fishing. I sure hope that they will enjoy their life together fishing as many rivers as time will allow. I believe so many couples do not share common interests which hinders relationships. If you are able to be together and share a common passion the odds go way up of a lasting relationship. I am not a relationship counselor, I am a trout fisherman. I am blessed to be able to share my knowledge via my Blog, and first hand along the rocky shores of the beautiful Bow River. See you out along the banks!
